History

Located at the northeast corner of High and Marshall Streets, Goddard Pond initially served as a source of ice long before electrical refrigerators existed. Starting in 1826, icehouses were built on the Kennebec River and neighboring ponds. By 1896, 50 icehouses were located between Augusta and Bath, from which ice was delivered to ports as far away as New Orleans. These images, taken by E.L. & F.M. Stinson, probably in the winter of 1903-04, show how the ice was cut by saws and stored for later distribution. Members of the Goddard family, who lived on neighboring Goddard Street, owned the pond and sold ice from the pond until 1904. Then, the City purchased the pond and gradually turned it into a public skating rink. Other ice companies, such as Crystal Spring Ice Company, continued to cut ice from the pond for many years.
