Division of Solid Waste and Recycling

The Division of Solid Waste and Recycling manages the Bath Landfill and the City’s curbside collection of residential trash and recycling.

Place trash and recycling at the curb by 7:00 AM on your collection day and no earlier than 6:00 PM the night before.

  • Monday: All streets south of Route 1
  • Tuesday: All streets from Route 1 to the south of North Street
  • Wednesday: All streets north of North Street, west of High Street and North Bath
  • Thursday: All streets north of North Street and east of High Street

How do I get a blue bin?

Blue bins are available from the Bath Landfill for $10.00. The Landfill is open Monday - Friday 7:30 AM - 4:00 PM. 

What Can I Recycle?

  • Paper, including office paper, newspaper, magazines, mail, envelopes, catalogs, paper bags, and paperboard such as cereal boxes
  • Milk and juice cartons or jugs
  • Cardboard, including corrugated boxes that are flattened, clean, and dry
  • Plastic bottles and containers numbered 1 through 7
  • Metal, including aluminum cans, tin and steel cans, and clean aluminum foil
  • Glass bottles and jars of any color

Landfill

The Bath Landfill provides a safe, environmentally sound, affordable, and convenient place for disposal of solid waste for residents and businesses in Bath and several nearby communities. A permit is required to enter the landfill for both waste disposal and recycling.

Landfill Permits

  • Residential permits are available at the Landfill.
  • Commercial permits are available through the City Clerk’s Office on the first floor of City Hall.
  • Permits are valid for two years on a fiscal year basis, from July 1 through June 30.
  • Bath residents and Bath property owners may be asked to show photo identification and proof of residency or property ownership, such as a utility bill, vehicle registration, or City property tax bill.

Not Accepted at the Landfill

  • Liquids or septage
  • Sheetrock
  • Agricultural waste
  • Universal waste or hazardous waste
  • Vehicles
  • Asbestos and asbestos-containing waste, unless specifically authorized by the Maine Department of Environmental Protection
  • Contaminated soil, oily waste, or sludge
  • Dead animals
  • Medical or potentially infectious/pathogenic waste
  • Sandblasting grit, industrial process waste, fly ash, or bottom ash

 

Special Disposal

Composting

Sharps Disposal 

  • Place sharps in a rigid, leak-proof, puncture-resistant container with a tight fitting lid. For example: bottles for laundry detergent, bleach, soda two-liters and coffee cans.
  • Secure the lid of the container with heavy duty tape.
  • Label the container. Write the word "SHARPS" on all sides in big block letters
  • Place the container in the trash.

Important

  1. DO NOT put the sharps container in the recycling bin. It cannot be recycled.
  2. DO NOT put loose needles and other sharps in a recycling bin. They are not recyclable.
  3. DO NOT throw loose needles and others harps in the trash.
  4. DO NOT use plastic milk jugs as containers for sharps (they can poke through).
