Code Enforcement

The Code Enforcement Officer is responsible for the administration of various City and State codes, laws, and rules applicable to construction, development, health and safety, and quality of life, and zoning issues.

The Code Enforcement Office is responsible for the following:

• Administer all land use development, housing, building or related codes and all applicable state laws, rules and regulations. These codes include plumbing, sewer, electrical and heating.
• Receive applications for building activity and other development and provide assistance to those making those applications.
• Act as public liaison to and staff support to the Zoning Board.
• Serve as the City's Health Officer.
• Serve as the City's American With Disabilities Coordinator, for City buildings and services

Permits are not just paperwork—they help protect your investment, ensure your project is safe and legal, and help maintain neighborhood standards. Carrying out work without a permit can result in delays, rework or enforcement action.

Getting started:

1. Determine the scope of your project and whether a permit is required (e.g., structural work, addition, change of use). 

2. Review relevant handouts and specifications that apply to your project type.

3. Submit your application, fees and documentation to the Code Enforcement Office; you’ll be notified when review is complete and inspections are scheduled.

The Code Enforcement Office conducts inspections to ensure that construction and renovation projects meet safety and building code standards.

Inspections are required at various stages of construction, including foundation, framing, insulation, plumbing, electrical, and final completion. It’s the responsibility of the property owner or contractor to schedule inspections in advance.

Final inspections are required before a Certificate of Occupancy can be issued.

The City’s Land Use Code establishes zoning districts and development standards that guide how property can be used and built upon in Bath. These rules help ensure compatible growth, protect community character, and support long-term planning goals.
