As Bath’s Recreation Coordinator, you will plan, organize, and deliver recreational programs and events for residents of all ages and abilities. You’ll coordinate seasonal youth sports, lead summer camp, and develop engaging programs that reflect community needs. Working closely with the Parks and Recreation Director and Deputy Director, you play a key role in the Recreation Division—collaborating with staff, volunteers, and community partners to ensure safe, inclusive, and well-run programs.

This full-time, FLSA-exempt position is a Grade B06 on the City’s scale and offers a starting wage of $25.56 – $29.34 per hour, depending on experience. Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Plan, organize, and coordinate recreation programs, classes, leagues, camps, and special events for youth, teens, adults, seniors, and families.
- Serve as the Summer Camp Director from June through August.
- Coordinate seasonal sports programs, including fall, winter, spring, and summer leagues.
- Recruit and coordinate volunteers and coaches.
- Help develop municipal events, tournaments, and community-wide recreation activities.
- Review community needs and interests to develop new recreation programs.
- Create program schedules, practice and game calendars, registration timelines, event plans, and promotional materials.
- Keep accurate records for registrations, attendance, incident reports, and program evaluations.
- Promote programs through social media, websites, newsletters, flyers, and community outreach.
- Assist with program budgets, fees, purchasing, and expense tracking.
- Order and manage sports equipment, uniforms, awards, and event supplies.
- Follow municipal policies, risk management standards, and insurance requirements.
- Coordinate use of fields, courts, gyms, and facilities for practices, games, and special events.
- Clearly communicate program rules, expectations, schedules, and changes.
- Respond to participant concerns, discipline issues, and complaints in a professional and timely way.
- Work with schools, athletic associations, sponsors, and community organizations.
- Represent the Parks and Recreation Department at community events and outreach opportunities.
Minimum Qualifications
Education and Experience
- Associate degree in Parks and Recreation, Recreation Management, Leisure Studies, Education, or a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
- At least six months of experience in municipal recreation, program coordination, education, or a related field.
- Water Safety Instruction and CPR/First Aid/AED certifications preferred.
- Must be at least 21 years old, as required by the State of Maine.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
- Strong communication, conflict-resolution, and customer service skills.
- Ability to communicate clearly and professionally in person and in writing.
- Ability to work courteously and tactfully with coworkers, City departments, partner agencies, and the public.
- Knowledge of recreation program planning, youth and adult sports, league operations, and event management.
- Understanding of coaching principles, officiating needs, and sports safety standards.
- Knowledge of health and safety regulations and best practices.
- Familiarity with water safety principles.
- Ability to safely use field, facility, and recreation equipment.
- Ability to handle stressful situations and maintain confidentiality.
- Ability to respond quickly in emergencies and adjust plans when needed.
- Strong organization, scheduling, and multitasking skills.
- Ability to supervise and motivate staff, coaches, and volunteers.
- Ability to work with diverse groups and promote sportsmanship and inclusion.
- Ability to use recreation registration software, scheduling tools, and Microsoft Office.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including evenings and weekends.
- Valid driver’s license and good driving record.
- Ability to pass a background check.
This position is a Mandated Reporter under State of Maine law.
Physical Requirements
This job includes indoor and outdoor work in all types of weather and temperatures. The work includes both seated tasks and physically active tasks.
The employee must often walk, stand, sit, talk, and hear for extended periods of time. The employee may sometimes need to climb, balance, stoop, or kneel.
This position requires close vision, color vision, and the ability to adjust focus. The employee must frequently lift light items weighing 5 to 10 pounds and may occasionally lift items weighing up to 50 pounds.
The employee may need to operate a motor vehicle.
