About the Preserve

Butler Head Preserve is owned by the City of Bath and managed through a collaborative effort involving the City, the Bath Community Forestry Committee, and the Kennebec Estuary Land Trust (KELT). The Bath City Council approved the conservation easement in February 2013, and the easement was formally signed in March 2014.

The conservation easement helps protect the property for future generations by preserving wildlife habitat, natural resources, public access for low-impact outdoor recreation, and scenic views from Butler Head and adjacent waters.

Why It Matters

Butler Head is an important natural resource for the City of Bath. The preserve supports forest, wetland, and marine ecosystems while also providing opportunities for residents and visitors to connect with the outdoors.

The site is also valued as a place for nature study, bird watching, hiking, cross-country skiing, and forestry education. Its role goes beyond recreation. Butler Head is intended to serve as a living landscape where people can learn about conservation, habitat protection, and the long-term care of public forestland.

Conservation and Stewardship

The management of Butler Head is guided by the belief that the Butler Head and Butler Cove area is a critical resource and a community treasure. Stewardship efforts focus on balancing environmental protection with appropriate public use.

Managing the preserve requires careful attention to many factors, including timber management, wildlife habitat, soil erosion, wetlands, vernal pools, invasive species, watershed protection, recreational use, and the long-term effects of climate change.

Because forests change over time, Butler Head is considered an ongoing stewardship project. Management policies and plans continue to evolve as new information becomes available and conditions on the property change.

Management History

The conservation work at Butler Head has been years in the making. Through a grant from the Merrymeeting Bay Trust, the Bath Community Forestry Committee and KELT completed a survey that helped establish the acreage to be protected.

A Forest Ecosystem Management Plan for Butler Head and Whiskeag Woods was completed in 2007 as part of a joint effort with Maine Audubon and communities and land trusts across Maine. The project was designed to help municipalities develop ecologically based forest management plans for forested lands.

City partners have also worked with a state forester to update forestry management planning for Butler Head, helping guide the future of the preserve.

Education and Recreation

Butler Head Preserve is intended to support both education and limited recreation. The property offers a natural setting where schools, families, residents, and visitors can learn about forest ecology, habitat conservation, and environmental stewardship.

Low-impact recreational activities may include hiking, bird watching, nature observation, and cross-country skiing. Visitors should expect a natural forest setting that may be less formal than more developed trail systems. This working landscape reflects the realities of forest stewardship and changing environmental conditions.

Management Goals

The City of Bath, through the Bath Community Forestry Committee, works to encourage environmentally sound use of Butler Head for educational and limited recreational purposes while conserving the land for the enjoyment and benefit of future generations.

Conservation

Protect and maintain the existing ecosystems, including forest, wetland, marine, and wildlife habitat areas.

Education

Support opportunities for schools and the public to use Butler Head as a place for environmental learning and study.

Recreation

Provide opportunities for residents to experience and enjoy the natural environment through low-impact activities such as hiking, bird watching, nature study, and cross-country skiing.

Looking Ahead

Butler Head Preserve will continue to be managed with an emphasis on conservation, stewardship, and public understanding. As the landscape changes and new information becomes available, the City and its partners will continue refining management practices to protect this unique resource.

By preserving Butler Head today, the City of Bath is helping ensure that its forests, habitats, and educational value remain available to future generations.
